On October 19, 2019, a resolution was passed at the AGM of the Société de la francophonie manitobaine (SFM) mandating the SFM to play a leadership role in the sale of the former St. Boniface City Hall at 219 Provencher Blvd to encourage the retention of the building in the interest of the Francophone community of Manitoba.
Between October 2019 and April 2021, the SFM worked with stakeholders in the case, as well as Heritage St. Boniface and the City of Winnipeg, to gain a better understanding of the future of the former St. Boniface City Hall and Fire Hall 1 site.
In April 2021, SFM and Manitoba Possible have signed a letter of understanding that stipulates that the SFM will purchase the former St. Boniface City Hall once Manitoba Possible officially takes possession of the building from the City of Winnipeg. The purchase will proceed once the real estate transaction between Manitoba Possible and the City of Winnipeg is finalized.
With this agreement, the SFM hopes to provide stability for the tenants currently occupying the building. The SFM and Manitoba Possible would like to emphasize their willingness to collaborate on this issue that has raised the passions of the Francophone community.
